CHAPTER EIGHT

No Rest for the Wicked

Vega had no idea how she was going to sell the ring to pay off her debt if it was illegal to do so. It wasn’t just valuable, but it was so powerful and dangerous the Raven Court wanted it. She didn’t even know what the blasted thing did.

But the Raven Court apparently did.

Vega didn’t know whether it was the injury or every muscle in her body contracting with stress, but the dull pain behind her eyes was steadily growing. Her fatigue had returned in full force. She wished she could have napped at her desk.

Before sixth period was over, Vega realized she was going to have to tap into Polly’s resources once again. She called Polly up to her desk. “I need to talk to you about your grade. In private.”

Polly forgot to infuse music into her voice. “My grade? Aren’t I g-g-getting an A?” Her face twitched as she stuttered. That probably meant a ghost was trying to possess her. Infusing her voice with music and magic was the only solution to keep them from doing that—a remedy Vega had suggested.

“I bet she cheated,” a girl in the back whispered.

Polly’s worried expression didn’t leave her face. “I don’t cheat. Sometimes I get help from my friends, but that’s more like tutoring.”

Terry Gerrymander snorted, “What friends?”

Vega scowled at her gossiping students. “Less talking, more working.”

It hadn’t been that long since Vega had been a student at the school, the social outcast who’d been the butt of teenagers’ jokes. No one had wanted to associate with a shifter who couldn’t control her powers.

Vega walked Polly into the hallway and closed the door. “Your grade is fine.” It would have been more practical to keep the door open to watch the students and use a sound-barrier spell, but that wasn’t currently an option.

Polly sagged against the wall, a relieved smile on her face.

“I need you to ask your friends a question,” Vega whispered. “Who has an ample supply of starlight I can borrow?”

“Um. . . .” Polly glanced over her shoulder as if someone was standing just behind her. Probably someone was. A ghost.

Polly frowned. “There’s someone particular in this school who has been storing a lot of starlight, but she isn’t likely to give it to you for free.”

“Is this the same person who blabberscotch in the almond paste?” Vega stopped talking when her words ceased to make sense. The tongue-twister jinx wasn’t going to allow her to mention Malisha in the context of what she’d done to injure Vega.

Polly glanced to her right, her eyes going wide with horror. “No way! She did what?” She looked from the air to Vega. “Wow, I didn’t know Ms. Bane kicked you in the head! And she stepped on your hand?”

“Don’t repeat it or else she’s going to jinx you too.” Just as importantly, Vega didn’t want her students to find out she was incapable of protecting herself.

Polly continued to tilt her head as if listening. Vega
